Patrick or Peter SUTHERLAND (The names are interchangeable as it is Scottish) (Official list of Inhabitants of Bengal 1811. Born Somewhere in England (Profession Victualler). Victualler and agent, Purveyor of the Free School in Calcutta. It is a family rumour that he provided these services while affiliated with the army? Married 1st Wife, Ann BALFOUR in Calcutta 1804, December 31st. (Had three children). She Died 1815. Feb 19th, and Peter re-married the same year!! (See Below)

  1. Francis Sutherland ,(Born in Calcutta 1805 (Baptised January 10th).Married Petronella Blackenbury at Moulmain 1834 April 22nd 
  2. Walter Harvey Sutherland. Son of Peter Sutherland. Born 1808, February 14th Calcutta (Baptised june 19th).Died 1829 October 1st, aged 21
  3. Matilda Cheese Sutherland. Daughter of Peter Sutherland. Born 1811, January 11 Calcutta (Baptised 1811 March 27th)

Patrick Sutherland, Widower of Calcutta, Re-Married 1815 November 1st, at Calcutta, Sarah Eleanor BYRN. They had at least four children: 

  1. Charles Jackson Sutherland, 
  2. David Sutherland, 
  3. James McGowan Sutherland, 
  4. Wale Haydon Sutherland

Walter Harvey SUTHERLAND (Son of (2) Francis Sutherland. Advocate (1st Class) civil servant to the courts of India and Burma (Magistrate)  married Helen Lawrence LONG in 1871 at Moulmein (Burma), Died 1879. Buried at Tenasserim Division, Amherst District, Roman Catholic Cemetery - (Thanks to Simon Stockdale from the INDIA L List). Number of Children unknown

  1. Joseph Francis Sutherland. Son of (3) Walter Harvey Sutherland. Born 1872 (Not Traced). Barrister . Married Bridget Hedding (Spinster) 1901 April 8th.
  2. Patrick Alexandre Sutherland. Son of (3) Walter Harvey Sutherland. Born 1876 (Baptism record not identified). Jailor and later Superintendent of Jails (Burma). 

Walter Harvey SUTHERLAND. Re-Married Philomene Lilian FORBES 1879 at Moulmein (St Patricks). They had a lot of children (10):

  2. John Walter Harvey Sutherland.  Born 1881 3rd October
  3. Nesta Agnes Constance Sutherland.  Born 1883 21st January
  4. Henry Kenneth Sutherland. . Born 1884 31st March
  5. Lonie? Earl Balfour Sutherland.  Born 1885 20th October
  6. Claire Margeret Sutherland. . Born 1887 20th August
  7. Edna Noeline? Sutherland.  Born 1890 14th December
  8. Gladys Esme Marlina Sutherland. . Born 1893 30th January
  9. Vernon Andrew Ross Sutherland. . Born 1894 2nd November
  10. Daphne Marie Sheila Sutherland. . Born 1987 23rd September

Next Generation

Patrick Alexandre SUTHERLAND. Son of (3) Walter Harvey Sutherland. Born 1876 (Baptism record not identified). Jailor and later Superintendent of Jails (Burma). Married Christina Coerson SHLYM (a spinster) 1896 August 10th (St Patricks). Died of Asthma at 60 (Died 1936 September 15th), Buried at St Mary's Church, Moulmein. They had at least eight Children 

  1. Alfred Walter Sutherland . Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Baptised 1897
  2. Patrick Evans Sutherland. Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Baptised 1902
  3. Cuthbert Markey? Sutherland. Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Baptised 1903
  4. Helen Gwendoline Sutherland . Daughter of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Baptised 1906. Died 1972 Leicester England
  5. Constance Enid Sutherland & 1st Wife. Daughter of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland. Baptised 1908. Died age 16 in Rangoon
  6. Mary Magdoline? Sutherland. Daughter of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Baptised 1911. Reverend Mother in Tongu
  7. Alexandre Coerson Sutherland . Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland & 1st Wife. Born 1917-19 (Could not Trace). Died in World War 2
  8. Charles Beresford Sutherland. Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland. Baptised 1914 October 16th. Masters Captain & Clothes Shop Proprietor.

Charles Beresford SUTHERLAND. Son of (4) Patrick Alexandre Sutherland. Baptised 1914 October 16th. Masters Captain & Clothes Shop Proprietor. Married Mavis Olive DORSEY in Madras 1941 September 22nd (St Mary's). They had five children:

  1. Olive Mary Sutherland.  Born September 10th 1942 Calcutta (St Thomas's)
  2. David Beresford Sutherland  Born June 18th 1944 Madras (Our Lady of Lourdes, Perambur), Father of Several Children including ME - Paul Beresford Sutherland
  3. Raymond Micheal Sutherland. . Born March 9th 1946 Madras (St Mary's)
  4. Valerie Helen Sutherland. 
  5. ?? Sutherland
