William Bird born 1798 Loughborough Leicestshire UK, served in India with the 14th Buckinghamshire Regiment between (1814 - 1825) and in the 54th West Norfolk Regiment between (1825 - 1832). William Bird married Eliza Jeffery (B. Abt.1806 - D. 1832)at Carrisbrooke on the Isle of Wight on the 1st May 1825. Eliza died March 1832 with baby daughter Fanny, Trichinopoly India. William died a Sgt Major in the 54th Regiment in November 1832, and is buried with Eliza and Fanny in St John's church Trichinopoly. William was survived by his son William Bird (jnr) born Abt. 1828 in Cannanore India. He was sent to the Madras Male Military orphange until 1840 then he was shipped off the Australia on the "Sesostris" as part of the NSW government scheme to employ Orphans from India as apprentices. On my ggrandfather's birth certificate, his Father's name is given as James Bird. Although I cannot find a marriage, on the 1861 Census, an Alice Bird (nee Sands) is listed as living with her two young sons, one being my ggrandfather, Richard James Bird,  at Hawkhurst, in Kent, UK. There is a note added against Alice that "she is supported by her husband who is employed on the Rail--INDIA". Similarly in the 1871 Census, James is not mentioned, and the words "husband absent"  are added. By the 1881 Census Alice is stated to be a widow.

Alice was born in 1823 at Hawkhurst, Kent. UK, and her two children were born in 1856 and 1858 in the UK., I have unsuccessfully searched Parish registers etc, but without any birth, marriage or death for James Bird I am stuck. As my only clue is the phrase "employed on the Rail- INDIA", I am hoping some of you very knowledgeable people can point me in the right direction.

Sybil BIRD (daughter of ? BIRD) (died in Perth) married William Edward REAY (died Oct 2002 in Perth) . William spent his last few years alone, and died of heart failure on 16/10/2002, aged 74, in the Joondalup Health Campus where his brothers Carlton and David visited him. The contributory cause was pneumonia. His final resting place is in the garden of remembrance in the  Karrakatta cemetery in Western Australia. No Children.

Lionel BIRD (son of ? BIRD) married Pearl GOMES. They live at 73 Vellelore Rd, Podanur 641023, South India, and are doing some marvellous work for the underprivileged children there.
