Major Ballard: served under Major-General Meadows and Lord Cornwallis with the 'English Grand Army' at the Siege of Siringapatam against Tippu Sultan. There is a Memorial Plaque in a Mumbai cathedral of one Major General Ballard. Ballard Pier in Mumbai and Ballard Road in Bangalore appear to be named after him. Major Ballard's son became a Judge and served in the ICS (Indian Civil Service) in the Madras Presidency. His son Charles Henry (Harry) Ballard (my Great Grandfather) was a Civil & Mechanical Engineer.
Charles Henry (Harry) Ballard constructed the Harvey Cotton Mills in Madurai, which exists to this day. (Where he met and married my Great Grandmother Mary Cuxton). He also built Cotton Mills in Koilpatti, Mills for Parrys, Walcots and the Nizam of Hyderabad. He died of Typhoid aged 42, his wife Mary died in childbirth aged 28 yrs. When Mary died Charles Henry (Harry) Ballard married Mary's sister Fanny Cuxton, they had one daughter Laura.
This information was told to me by my Grandmother Ethel Smith (Charles Henry Ballad's daughter) who passed away in 1985, and my Aunt Dolly (Adolphine Smith), Ethel's daughter.
