1498: When Vasco Da Gama reached the
Indian port of Calicut, he found the Indians appalled at the shoddiness of the
goods he had on offer. He went home only with cloves and peppercorns.
On 31 December 1600, the East India Company was founded
to challenge Dutch and Portuguese dominance in the spice trade.
